Electric Car Gauges at Goodwood
Caerbont Automotive Instruments return to the Goodwood Festival of Speed with a focus on gauges designed and manufactured for the growing electric vehicle market.
The rise of electric cars and vehicles is transforming the automotive landscape and provides the focus for Caerbont Automotive Instruments CAI (stand 89) at the 2022 Goodwood Festival of Speed (23-26 June).
CAI specialise in the design and manufacture of new and replacement gauges for classic cars and motorcycles. The range of gauges includes the iconic SMITHS brand, which feature in many classic cars produced by automotive icons Aston Martin, Rolls-Royce and many others.
In recent years, CAI has worked on a number of projects involving classic car conversions to electric and brand-new electric cars. These include the Everrati Porsche 911, Land Rover Series IIA and GT40, the Aston Martin DB5 Junior built by The Little Car Company, and the classic Mini. In each case, the design focuses on producing gauges with a classic appearance but measuring new performance criteria relevant to an electric-driven engine.
CAI also welcome a special guest onto their stand. On display on stand 89 is the 1967 Mini renovated and converted into Tesla-powered electric car by Suffolk-based Simon Benton. The Mini took three years and tens of thousands of pounds to renovate and convert and now features an electric 300hp Tesla engine.
“The demand for gauges has changed significantly over the past few years,” explained Gavin Roberts, CAI’s Managing Director. “The drive towards vehicle electrification has given birth to a new generation of car manufacturers and converters. Despite the car enthusiast embracing electric cars, they still want the same traditional appearance, especially with classic cars such as the Porsche 911.
“There is also growth in the electrification of marine vessels including boats and yachts. We are working on a number of marine projects creating new gauges in a traditional styling.
“The evolution has been a challenge for our engineering team, but with investment in new equipment and modernisation of our manufacturing processes, we are now well-positioned to meet that design and build expectation and demand.”
