The Porsche 911 Carrera RS 2.7 was, and still is, unique. Originally conceived as a race car, this classic became available to general road users in 1972. And the Carrera RS was fast. Already established as a multiple race winner, this became the fastest production-built 911.
Indeed, for many, the Porsche 911 Carrera RS is still the best 911 ever built.
The Carrera RS was developed to race. Indeed, the notation RS stands for Rennsport in German, meaning race sport. However, in the early Seventies, the FIA (Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile) had strict entry requirements for cars competing in the Group 4 racing class, encompassing sports car racing, GT racing and rallying. The 1966 requirements stated that competing cars had to have a minimum production requirement of 50 units in 12 consecutive months and had to be fitted with all equipment necessary for use on public roads.
Hence, the birth of the road-worthy Porsche 911 Carrera RS.
Released at the Paris Motor Show in 1972, Porsche initially built 500 road models, which were nearly identical to the racing version. They sold out in less than a week. This unexpected demand pushed the total production above 1,500.
Initially, the Carrera RS could not be legally driven on the open road in the US and was confined to racing. Somewhat ironically, given the size and nature of US-built cars of the time, this was due to the RS not having any emissions equipment as it had been made as a European road-race car.
The 210 bhp, 2.7 litre engine could propel the 975 kg weight Carrera RS from 0-60 mph in only 5.5 seconds. With a top speed of 153 mph, this ignited the passions of both Porsche and sports car enthusiasts.
The 1973 Porsche 911 Carrera RS 2.7 is widely regarded as the holy grail when it comes to 911s. Well maintained models remain in great demand.
In recent times, various Carrera RS originals have sold at auction. Prices range depending on the condition and history of the car.
One of 17 original 911 Carrera RS 2.7 Lightweights, with right hand drive configuration and sold in the United Kingdom, won the Circuit of Ireland, Donegal International and Castrol Manx International Rallies in 1974. In total, the 911 participated in 40 rallies, while being famously photographed at the Donegal International Rally in June of 1974, being launched into the air by Irish driver Cathal Curley. The Carrera RS was auctioned off by RM Sotheby’s for over £780,000.
Another original Porsche 911 Carrera RS, originally delivered to an owner in the United States, sold for over £315,000 at Silverstone Auctions’ Autosport International Sale.
