SMITHS instrumentation is synonymous with many of the classic cars and motorcycles parading around the 2024 Goodwood Festival of Speed. SMITHS gauges manufacturer Caerbont Automotive Instruments (CAI) returns to the festival for the 10th successive year, exhibiting on stand number 62-63. Once again, CAI will showcase both its classic and new instrumentation featuring both traditional and CAN technologies. This year, CAI welcome on the stand the stunning LightSpeed Motorcycle from Langen Motorcycles, complete with a CAI designed and built dual instrument featuring new secret-lit technology.
CAI continues to build the SMITHS instrumentation featuring on popular classic cars built by Aston Martin, Jaguar, Land Rover, and for classic motorbikes such as Norton. The replacement gauges for such classic vehicles are designed and built using the original drawings, with updates using modern technology and the introduction of many digital versions.
At Goodwood, CAI will display the updated Land Rover Defender 90/110 speedometer, which has replaced the mechanical version. The new speedometer will run off 12/24 with dual OLED trip and total distance in the same case and with the same dial.
In recent years, CAI has been commissioned to design and build gauges for a wide range of new vehicles, such as the Langen Lightspeed motorcycle and The Little Car Company’s electric junior versions of marques cars such as the Aston Martin DB5 Junior, the Ferrari Testa Rossa Junior, the Bugatti Baby II and the recently launched Bentley Blower Junior. Following the growing demand for electrified vehicles, CAI has developed gauges for both new and restored electric cars including Everrati.
CAI’s range of replacement gauges for classic Porsche cars including the 911 and 356 are particularly popular with enthusiasts. Both the restored 911 from Tuthill Porsche and reimaged Porsche 911 from Singer Vehicle Design feature bespoke and feature gauges designed and built by CAI. A recent project for Singer involved designing a new gold-plated tachometer for the classic Porsche 911.
The CAI engineering team is presently working on a number of special projects including designing gauges incorporating classic watch features, reflecting SMITHS Instruments origins as a clock and watch manufacturer.
